Tips for Keeping Your Child’s Smile Healthy After the Holidays

The holidays are a time for joy and delicious treats. Unfortunately, germs don’t take a vacation, so staying vigilant with your oral care is even more important during the holidays.

Don’t worry, we’re not here to scare you away. Read our three tips to help your little ones (and maybe even you) keep your smile in tip-top shape during and after the holidays.

1. Stay Consistent with Brushing & Flossing

Arguably the easiest way to keep your child’s smile healthy is through good brushing and flossing habits. It’s important to always brush at least twice a day, but during the holidays a mid-day brush is a good idea if they’ve been indulging in sugary treats.

2. Get Thee to the Dentist!

The holidays are a busy time for most but try to pencil in a trip to the dentist either before or during the holidays and again following them.

Having a baseline understanding of your child’s oral health before the festivities is a great way to give your child’s dentist the information they’ll need to monitor any changes after the holidays.

3. Finish That Treat!

It may be a bit unheard of for a dentist to tell you to allow your child to polish off that candy cane or cup of hot chocolate, but the truth is slowly sipping or eating on sugar all day is potentially more devastating than just finishing it off and calling it quits. The sugars and acids continue to do their damage for as long as 30 minutes after each bite or sip.

Finishing the treat gives your mouth time to neutralize the acid or dissolve the sugars without restarting that clock. Drinking water also helps wash away excess sugars.
